Jim has been involved within the Scottish Borders taxi trade since 1987 and has during that time seen the best and worst of the job. The 24 hour service and the endless hours sitting on a taxi rank doing little or nothing no longer hold any appeal.
His quest for a healthier work, life balance dictates that his efforts are now aimed at providing a prompt and reliable day time service to Melrose, Newstead, Darnick and the Tweedbank rail station combined with competetive pricing for longer distance travel requests.
8am to 6pm, seven days a week with a little flexibility. Requests for travel outside of the stated hours shall be considered, or I may simply recommend another operator.
The 826 taxi is able to offer the full range of travel services you may expect including, but not limited to:
The Seat Toledo. Not a top of the range limousine by any means. Simply an honest reliable mid sized family car that handles the variables of being a taxi for Melrose, Darnick and Newstead surprisly well.
It has a large boot and enough space for four average sized passengers, although I do concede that the rear middle seat would soon lose some appeal on a longer journey.
I am operating at my most efficient when the hire starts, ends or simply passes through or very close to Melrose, Newstead or Darnick including the Tweedbank rail station and it is then that I can offer the best savings over the standard metered fare.
Do not take it for granted that the fare will be discounted but be confident you will never be over charged. I apply my own formula to the official metered fare for the chargeable distance travelled as set out and enforced by the Scottish Borders council and it is likely that savings will be offered on any accepted booking.
Example: Melrose to Berwick-Upon-Tweed rail station. Day time 1-4 passengers.
Metered fare: £66. 826 taxi would quote £54.

There are many organised tours of the Scottish Borders which follow a theme such as visiting the abbeys at Melrose, Dryburgh, Kelso and Jedburgh, all within a set timetable which must be adhered to.
Tour Scottish Borders is a service provided by the 826 taxi and offers some thing rather different. An invite to plan your own small party tour based on only the places that are of interest to you, and decide the time spent at each point along the way.
A flexible alternative. I shall optimise the route to include all of the places you wish to visit and give an indication of how long the travel is likely to take for each stage of the journey. How long spent at any location is then entirely up to the individual or group.
Sight seeing tours of the Scottish Borders by taxi could also prove to be a surprisingly cost effective alternative to the one size fits all organised tour, since the 826 taxi is happy to offer savings of up to fifty percent when compared to the standard taxi metered fares.
Simply fill in the quotation form to receive a no obligation tailormade quote and benefit from an up to fifty percent discount against the standard metered fare. You may be pleasantly surprised.
The 826 taxi is based in Melrose which is the very heart of the region and serves the Tweedbank rail station. It is only possible to benefit from the quoted maximum savings over the metered fare when starting and ending your tour in this area.
However simply passing through or close to Melrose, Newstead, Darnick or Tweedbank rail station is likely with any Scottish Borders tour and will yield some useful saving over normal metered fare. Request your personal quotation to see how much you could save.^ top of page ^
When tracing your Scottish Borders ancestry, it can be the remoteness of some of your ancestral settlements in the Scottish Borders that makes the use of public transport to visit them all within a set timetable quite impossible.
It is then that I may be of some help since I offer small party bespoke tours by taxi to connect all the locations you are interested in visiting. Use the quotation form to provide the full list of stops you wish to make.
I shall then optimise the route to include all of the places of ancestral interest you wish to visit and with up to fifty percent discount on the standard metered taxi fare could prove both time and cost effective.
826 taxi is based right in the heart of the Scottish Borders. Suggested maximum fare discount is only achievable when start and end of tour is close to this location, perhaps at a local guest house in Melrose, Darnick or Newstead.
Not starting / ending tour at Melrose, Newstead, Darnick or Tweedbank rail station? Not a problem. Jim is happy to quote for any viable travel request you may have and if not the cheapest it will still be the fairest.
I enjoy both but it becomes more personal when someone is tracing their ancestry. You are likely to visit places you have never been before with an ancestral tour since not every great grandfather was a notable figure in history who lived at what is now a tourist attraction.
The sense of pleasure when someone finds a new link from tracing a known ancester is good, although you also share the disappointment when a lead turns out to be a dead end.
I do get more involved and something as simple as finding the written record indexing the position of a certain headstone or even better the inscription it carries can save the seeker time and frustration.^ top of page ^
